The invention comprises an apparatus and method for inserting a compressible cleaning element into a container. The apparatus comprises a body 12 defining a chamber 13 adapted to receive the container 90. The chamber 13 has an open end for receiving the cleaning element 100. The apparatus further comprises a pneumatic circuit connected to the chamber 13, the circuit has a suction mode in which air is drawn through the chamber 13 to draw the cleaning element 100 into the container 90. The invention is particularly suited for use in inserting resilient cleaning or wiper balls into sleeves for use in cleaning internal passages within drillstrings following oil and gas drilling operations.
