PURPOSE: An authentication apparatus and method for a statistical user are provided to increase security and user convenience by determining application execution and additional authentication according to each situation. CONSTITUTION: A user authentication system(100) comprises a storage unit(101), an updating unit(102), and a probabilistic authentication unit(103). The storage unit stores a confidence value, a reference value, and a user model. The updating unit reduces the confidence value saved in the storage unit according to a generation state of a user event within preset time range. The updating unit can update the user model saved in the storage unit. The probabilistic authentication unit determines the user event requesting application execution which need authentication in the generation state of the user event.
