The device (1) has a fitting-integrated monitoring unit (3) including a number of sensor units and connected with a central evaluation unit (10). The sensor units include an opening and/or closing sensor (2) e.g. radio frequency identification (RFID) chip, and a vibration sensor e.g. acceleration sensor, which is based on another type of an action principle in comparison to the opening and/or closing sensor. The evaluation unit is integrated in a housing of the monitoring unit. The evaluation unit is provided with a logic unit (22). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a monitoring device. The opening and/or closing sensor is a reed contact, Hall-sensor, and anisotropic magneto resistance (AMR)/giant magneto resistance (GMR) sensor. The vibration sensor is a piezo-element and mass based sensor.
