Provided is a method for manufacturing particles containing a metal oxide. In said method, a metal-oxide sol that has a pH of 7 or higher and comprises metal-oxide colloidal particles dispersed in water is fed into a liquid containing a solvent that has a solubility of at least 0.05 g/100 ml in 20°C water at and has a relative permittivity at 20°C of 30 or lower if said solvent is protic and 40 or lower otherwise; an aggregate of the metal-oxide colloidal particles is produced in said liquid; and said aggregate is dried and processed, using heat or the like, into water-insoluble particles. By selecting the solvent appropriately, the particles can be made into shapes such as flakes, fibers, and spheres.
