<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode for a lithium ion secondary battery having a high electrode density, and excellent electrolyte retentivity and electrolyte permeability, and offering excellent battery characteristics in a lithium ion secondary battery. <P>SOLUTION: A negative electrode active material layer is made of a material containing an active material composed of a carbon material, carbon fiber being linear and having an average diameter of 100 to 1000 nm, and a binder.
