An optical connector (1A) to which an optical fiber cord including an optical fiber tape core wire and an outer cover is assembled comprises: a ferrule member (6) holding a plurality of embedded fibers (14) fusion-spliced to a plurality of respective optical fibers constituting the tape core wire; a fusion splice protection sleeve (16) for protecting the fusion splice portion; housings (7, 8) having, at the rear end, a recess for being mounted with the torn outer cover and housing the ferrule member (6) and the fusion splice protection sleeve (16); and a fixing member (9) for holding the outer cover between the housings (7, 8) and itself and fixing the outer cover to the housings (7, 8). A method for assembling the optical connector (1A) comprises: tearing the outer cover at an end of the optical fiber cord and exposing the tape core wire; fusion-splicing each of the optical fibers constituting the tape core wire and each of the embedded fibers (14) held by the ferrule member (6); mounting the torn outer cover on the recess formed at the rear end of the housings (7, 8) housing the ferrule member (6); and holding the outer cover between the fixing member (9) and the housings (7, 8) and fixing the outer cover to the housings (7, 8).
