The method involves partially covering a cooling passage with an outer surface of a piston blank (10), and forming an open groove (12) at the outer surface of the piston blank for the cooling passage. A continuous ring (20) is filled with a reinforcement material and partially covered, where the ring is positively attached in the groove. The ring is radically and inwardly deformed at an area using an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) method, where the reinforcement material is introduced by thermal spraying and the groove is directed towards a piston crown side. An independent claim is also included for a piston for a combustion engine.
