<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device which reduces crosstalk without impairing brightness and displays a high quality three-dimensional image. <P>SOLUTION: An image display device includes an image display element for modulating incident light from a light source, a polarized light separation element which has a characteristic of transmitting first polarized light and reflecting second polarized light different from the first polarized light and synthesizes image light from the image display element to be guided to a projection optical system, and a retardation plate disposed on the projection optical system side of the polarized light separation element.
