<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To specify a drill hole relating to an auxiliary device of a drill tool for determining a distance from the drill tool (drilling machine, boring machine) to a workpiece and a controlling method relating to the same. <P>SOLUTION: The auxiliary device can be connected to the drill tool 1. The auxiliary device has a camera 25 lined and arranged in an operating direction 4 for recording images of an operating surface 5 and the drill hole 7 formed by the drill tool 1. An image processor is arranged for specifying the drill hole 7 in the image. An evaluation unit 29 determines the distance 52 from the drill tool 1 to the workpiece 6 based on the distance from the drill hole 7 to a reference point in the image.
