The dispersibility of mica when mixed or ground in liquid media is increased by first mixing the mica in powder form with lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic or behenic acid or hydroxy stearic acid or a salt of one of these acids. The mica may be mixed with a solution of the fatty acid in a solvent, the solvent subsequently being evaporated, or a dispersion of mica in water may be mixed with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt or soap of the fatty acid, after which the mica is filtered off, washed, and dried. In examples, mica is mixed with solutions in butyl alcohol and xylol of stearic acid, lauric acid and myristic acid, and the solvent evaporated, and dispersions of mica in water are mixed with aqueous solutions of sodium stearate, potassium stearate, ammonium stearate, sodium laurate and potassium palmitate, the mica filtered off, washed and dried. |
