A moulding composition comprises a slurry of ceramic fibres and a liquid dispersion of at least 1% by weight of colloidal silica, the composition being retentive on drying of at least 10% by weight of silica based on the fibre. The composition may also contain plaster of Paris, powdered or flaked graphite or carbon, micronized mica, powdered asbestos, Portland cement, powdered ceramic clays and earth, and particles of glass, metals, corundum, and quartz. There may also be incorporated as reinforcement, wires e.g. of titanium, wire screening, and glass fibre. The moulding of blocks of the material is described. The composition may be fired at 2300 DEG F. after drying to produce a high strength low shrinkage refractory insulation material. U.S.A.
