<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recording apparatus which can reliably detect presence or absence of the recorded medium placed on a tray. <P>SOLUTION: The image recording apparatus includes: a roller pair which transports a media tray along a straight path; a platen provided downward of the straight path; and a media sensor, provided above the straight path while facing the platen, and emitting the light downward to receive the reflection. In the media tray, a first opening is formed in the area which can place the recording medium, and a second opening is formed to areas other than the above area. A control part carries out detection by the media sensor in the state that the media sensor is opposed to the first opening and in the state that the media sensor is opposed to the second opening.
