<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To mitigate the drawback of a conventional applicator. <P>SOLUTION: A cosmetic applicator comprises: a sheath (16) that extends along a longitudinal axis (X-X) to a free end (16a); a handle (18) that is connected to the sheath (16); a central stem (14) that extends along the axis (X-X) to a free end (14a), the central stem (14) and the sheath (16) being slidably mounted relative to each other; and an applicator head (12) that is situated at the free end (14a) of the central stem, the sheath (16) forming, at its free end (16a), a wiper member (17) that is adapted to wipe the applicator head (12). The sheath (16) further has, at its free end (16a), at least one recess (20) that passes radially therethrough and that opens out axially.
