<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide 3,4'-oxybisphthalimide compound useful as a monomer for a thermoplastic polyimide; and to provide a process for producing the same. <P>SOLUTION: The 3,4'-oxybisphthalimide compound is represented by formula (I), wherein R may be identical or different, and denotes a 1-4C linear or branched-chain alkyl group, or a substituted or non-substituted aryl group.
