The method involves verifying authorization of the user for starting the motor vehicle. A valve element (4) is actuated to interrupt the fuel supply to an internal combustion engine (5) on detecting an unauthorized user. The pressure in the fuel system of the motor vehicle is continuously monitored, and an alarm system (7) is actuated if an atypical pressure is detected in the fuel system. An independent claim is also included for a device for protection of motor vehicles against theft or misuse.
