<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a carbonyl compound from a wide range of applicable substrates by using a molecular oxygen as an oxidant while hardly causing environmental problems because the method utilizes a raw material with little waste. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing the carbonyl compound involves bringing a primary alcohol, a secondary alcohol, an aldehyde or an aromatic alkane as the substrate into contact with the oxygen in the presence of an iodine compound while irradiating them with light.
