The present invention relates to a method for purifying higher purity methyl formylbenzoate comprising the steps of: (a) adding alcohol to reaction by-products containing methyl formylbenzoate, which are produced during the preparation of DMT, and filtering this mixture; (b) adding (i) hydroxylamine or an inorganic salt of hydroxylamine and (ii) an alkali component to a filtrate obtained through the filtering to convert methyl formylbenzoate in the filtrate into methyl-4-formylbenzoate through oximation and then filtering the resultant mixture; (c) dissolving the prepared mixture of methyl-4-formylbenzoate into toluene or methylene chloride; and (d) adding an acid to the mixture.
