PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of treating a humic substance which can stabilize the color tone, the humic substance and a humic substance derivative which can be obtained by the method of treating the humic substance, and a humic substance dispersion in which at least one of the humic substance and the humic substance derivative is dispersed. SOLUTION: The method of treating a humic substance comprises at least a step of subjecting at least one of a humic substance and a humic substance derivative to heat treatment. The method of treating a humic substance comprises at least a step of subjecting at least one of a humic substance and a humic substance derivative to acid treatment. The humic substance and the humic substance derivative are obtained by treating at least one of the humic substance and the humic substance derivative with the use of the above methods of treating the humic substance.
