A method of bonding two materials comprises plasma-treating an external surface of a first material, applying a primer to the treated surface, and applying a second uncured material so that it bonds to the primed surface whilst curing. The primer may be silane-based or a mixture of polyorganosiloxanes. The primer may be applied by brushing, wiping, or blowing or by using a nozzle attached to a plasma gun so that primer is only added to the surface where plasma treatment has occurred. The plasma is preferably produced with an air plasma generator spaced 4-25 mm from the first material. The second material may be in two-part form, wherein the parts are mixed prior to application and may be applied as a coating or in a mould. The first material may be polypropylene, polyetherether ketone (PEEK), polyether, polyurethane, or phenolic resin. The second material may be a silicone-based subsea insulation material or a polyurethane.
|
