In an apparatus for launching a boat C from a ship, a carrier structure 1 releasably and rotatably supports the boat at its bow and stern by stirrups 10 which engage the sides of the boat and the pivots 9, Fig. 6. The carrier 1 comprises a pair of end frames 6, 6a joined by longitudinal members 5, having resilient wheels 8a, 8b which permit the carrier to move transversely of the ship and also act as fenders during the lowering operation when the carrier 1 is supported by a cable 18 connected to a winch 20 via a brake 21. A latch 13, Fig. 6 operated by the handle 15, releases the boat from the carrier 1 on contact with the water. The carrier is secured in the stowed position with the wheels 8a and 8b engaging the rails 3, Figs 5, of the launching ship, by known latching means 22, 23, 24, Fig. 4, and the boat is securely stowed in the carrier 1 by latching means 25, Fig. 5. In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 10 the end frames 6 and 6a are formed with a short davit jib 31 and the boat is suspended at its bow and stern by pulley blocks 42, Fig. 14, having T-shaped hooks 40, which support stirrups 37 by the pivotably mounted grooved blocks 39, secured within the blocks 39 by latches 43 operated by pull-rods 44. The boat may be lowered as described in the first embodiment or it may be lowered suspended by the cable 32, from the carrier secured in the position II, Fig.10. The carrier is held in this position by releasable retainer cables 33 having one end secured to trolleys 34 travelling the underside of the rails 3 and adapted to abut at stops in the positions 34a. The carrier structure 1 may be lowered on to a wharf and used to transport the boat on land. The carrier structure may be used to launch a plurality of inflatable rafts and may also be used to hoist a boat on to a ship. The stirrups 10 may support the boat by engaging the sides of a launching cradle. |
