An estimated dynamic component temperature of the component is determined in accordance with at least one operating variable of the internal combustion engine, taking into consideration the dynamic behavior of the section of the internal combustion engine. An estimated stationary component temperature of the component is determined in accordance with at least one operating variable of the internal combustion engine without taking into consideration the dynamic behavior of the section of the internal combustion engine. An actual value is determined for the component temperature of the component in accordance with the estimated dynamic and stationary component temperatures of the component to be protected. Protective measures for the component are implemented in accordance with the actual value of the component temperature of the component to be protected.
