Protoporphyrinogen oxide enzyme-inhibiting herbicides are useful in a method for controlling unwanted cyanobacteria algae, mosses, liverworts, hornworts and other bryophytes. Of particular interest is the use of carfentrazone ethyl and certain metabolites thereof for control of unwanted cyanobacteria algae, mosses, liverworts, hornworts and other bryophytes.
