The system has a transmission shaft (1) connected at two ends to connecting rods (2) of pedals of a bicycle. A directional pinion (10) slidably engaged on the shaft includes a gear (11) at one end. The gear includes teeth (13) engaging with the pinion, and a sleeve (12) associated with a plate (6) for driving a chain (22). The pinion includes another gear (20) at the other end, where the latter gear includes teeth (21) engaging with the pinion. A driven shaft (30) includes a driven gear (31) meshing with the former gear, and another driven gear (32) connected to the latter gear by the chain.
