The present invention provides an imide compound represented by general formula (1). This imide compound exhibits excellent durability at high temperatures especially in cases when used as a thickening agent for grease. (In the formula, X represents a tetravalent residue that is obtained by removing four carboxyl groups from an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid; Y represents a divalent residue that is obtained by removing two amino groups from an aliphatic diamine or aromatic diamine; and R represents a residue that is obtained by removing one amino group from an aliphatic monoamine, alicyclic monoamine or aromatic monoamine.)
