The method involves introducing partially air into an exhaust channel (15) in the flow direction of the exhaust gases before the exhaust gas purifying components for avoiding the pollutant emission when starting the internal combustion engine (1). The air introduction is performed by compressed air from a pressure accumulator (17) or by a working cylinder in the engine block (11) of the internal combustion engine.
