A carriage is moved between workpiece-distant rest position and workpiece-oriented linear operation position by drive motor. A cylinder (160) having guide groove (165) is rotated about a cylinder axis (162). A guide system (200) is engaged into guide groove and equipped with guide system having guide elements (210,220) engaged in guide groove and parallel to cylinder axis. The guide elements are displaced in circumferential direction of cylinder such that guide elements are pushed away from section (163) of guide groove and carriage is moved to operation position. An independent claim is included for bending machine.
