<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a side airbag apparatus for a rear seat which can effectively constrain an occupant seated in the rear seat of a vehicle. <P>SOLUTION: In the side airbag apparatus for the rear seat, an inflator 50 disposed in a communication part 46 for communicating an upper chamber 32 with a lower chamber 34 of an airbag 28 directs its gas ejection port 58 toward the upper chamber 32 side, and gas is preferentially fed to the upper chamber 32. Further, a check valve 62 provided in the communication part 46 limits the movement of gas from the upper chamber 32 to the lower chamber 34. Thus, the gas pressure in the lower chamber 34 is kept lower than the gas pressure in the upper chamber 32, avoiding enhancement of the injury value of a waist part of an occupant 16 by strongly pressing the waist by the lower part side of the airbag 28.
