<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease bandwidth of signals, in coding video images. <P>SOLUTION: A predictive video coder performs gradient prediction, based on previous blocks (A, B and C) of image data. For a new block (X) of the image data, prediction determines a horizontal gradient and a vertical gradient from a single block (B) diagonally above the new block.
