Dyed foils or fibres of linear high molecular polyesters of aromatic dicarboxylic acids with dihydric aliphatic alcohols are manufactured by dyeing chips or granules of the polyester in an aqueous bath with a disperse dye at 90 DEG -150 DEG C., the dyed material then being dried and formed into shaped structures; preferably the dyeing is effected in presence of a carrier and/or a dispersing agent. In examples, polyethylene terephthalate chips or granules are dyed in presence of sodium 2:21-dinaphthylmethane-6:61-disulphonate with:-(1) compound (I); (2) the dioxazine obtained by cyclisation of 3:6-dichloro-2:5-bis-(41-methoxyphenylamino)- 1 : 4 - benzoquinone; (3) 1:4-diamino-2-nitroanthraquinone with acetic acid added; (4) compound (I) in which the CH3 ring-substituent is replaced by Cl, in presence of added acetic acid, chlorobenzene (carrier) and sodium 1:6- and 2:6-diisobutylnaphthalene-3-sulphonatesother carriers such as o-dichlorobenzene, trichlorobenzene, tetrahydronaphthalene, benzoyl benzoate or methyl salicylate may be used alternatively; (5) and (6) 1-amino-4-hydroxy-2-(b -hydroxy)-ethoxyanthraquinone or brominated 1:5-dihydroxy-4:8-diaminoanthraquinone in presence of acetic acid, chlorobenzene and sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate. It is also stated that Examples 1-4 may be applied to the use of the said brominated compound or its unbrominated precursor, or 1:4-diamino-2-methoxyanthraquinone, 1-amino-2-bromo-4-p-toluidinoanthraquinone or 2-nitro-4-sulphanilidodiphenylamine.
