An example method includes a client causing establishment of a streaming session of the client with a server to receive a stream of media data from the server, including receiving a description of the session. The description indicates delivery of a first portion of the media data to the client over a first transport-layer protocol, and indicates delivery of a second portion of the media data to the client over a second transport-layer protocol. The example method also includes the client causing receipt of the first and second portions of the media data transmitted to the client over respective ones of the first and second transport-layer protocols, where the first and second portions are received in an at least partially overlapping or even synchronous manner. The method may further employ a congestion control algorithm relative to the portions delivered over the first and second transport-layer protocols.
