[Also in Group XXXVI] A dry shaver 1 driven by a direct current motor 2 controlled by a switch 3 can be energized either from an alternating current source over rectifiers or from a small re-chargeable battery. An adaptor 5, having pins 6 for connection to an alternating current source, houses rectifiers 9, a resistor 10, switch contacts 11 and socket contacts 12; the dry shaver being provided with similar socket contacts 15. A lead 4 is provided to interconnect the shaver 1 and the adaptor 5, the end 14 of the lead having a plug with a long protuberance fixed thereto whilst the end 13 has a plug with a short protuberance. Due to the provision of the long protuberance the plug end 14 can only be inserted into the shaver socket 15 when the battery 24 is removed from the shaver whereupon the motor 2 is energized from the A.C. source over the rectifiers 9 with the resistor 10 short-circuited by the switch 11. When the battery 24 is housed within the shaver 1 and the lead 4 reversed with the short protuberance plug end 13 inserted into the shaver, the long protuberance end 14 when inserted into the adaptor 5 will open the switch contacts 11, thus inserting resistor 10 in the circuit. Under these conditions the current is reduced so that the motor is incapable of operation but the battery 24 will receive a charge. The battery terminals are so arranged that it is impossible to reverse the polarity of the circuit if the battery is wrongly inserted.
