In the inking system of a rotary press a transfer roller 11, Fig. 1, which extends across the whole width of the press, comprises a series of parts 11A, 11B &c., Fig. 4, which parts may be selectively operated such that either all the parts collect ink from a ductor roller 2, which also extends across the press and is in association with a main ink duct 1, or, at least one part (but not all) collects ink from the ductor roller 2 whilst each of the remaining parts collects ink from an auxiliary ink ductor roller 4, a series of which are arranged end-to-end across the press and are fed from individual ink ducts 3. In a third position of the transfer roller parts no ink is transferred at all. The transfer roller shown is divided into four parts which are arranged in pairs, each of which is controlled from one side of the press. The parts of each pair are eccentrically mounted relative to a fixed axis 9 such that rotational actuation of lever mechanism, such as 19A and 19B in the case of parts 11A and 11B, will move the selected roller part into and out of contact with the rollers 2, 3 and 7 as desired. Each roller part mounts a pinion wheel 18 by which it is rotated by the forme cylinder. In a further embodiment, the roller parts are eccentrically mounted on a fixed axle bar, the rotational drive for each pair of parts being transmitted individually to the parts at the respective side of the press. In yet another embodiment, each roller pair is coupled such that a single drive at the press side will suffice to rotate the parts. |
