Men's pants are fashioned on a straight-bar machine to produce a front pouch, Fig. 6, not shown. This is achieved by causing two outer groups a, b and b1, a1 of needles to hold their loops without knitting whilst continuing to knit on the central group b, b1 of needles. The number of needles knitting in the central groups is gradually increased and then decreased as diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 1. Subsequently all of the needles resume knitting. The widening and narrowing effect of the central group of needles can be effected a second time in succession before recommencing knitting. The machine has the normal presser mechanism modified during the fashioning of the pouch so that the needles are not caused to press and thereby fail to knit. The central needles are caused to press and knit by the action of auxiliary presser mechanism comprising two presser plates 101,102, Fig. 4 not shown, which bear on the backs of the needles and press them so that their heads engage the usual presser edge. The plates 101,102 are capable of being moved in an overlapping disposition such that the number of needles affected can be increased and decreased.
