The rotor 24 of a rotary I.C. engine of the n and n+1 lobe type is sealed by means of spring-loaded sealing strips in grooves in the apex of each lobe of the rotor and in the end faces of the rotor. Sealing strips 52 slide in apex grooves 50, slightly wider than the sealing strips, so that the groove is pressurized. The bottom of each groove 50 has an enlarged cylindrical portion at each end of the groove in which slides an intermediate seal member 56 which is slotted to take the sealing strip 52. Sealing strips 62, of L-shaped cross-section are fitted in grooves 60 in each end face of the rotor 24, and engage the flank portions 78 of the intermediate seal members 56. There is provided in the centre of each strip 62 a notch with which pins 72 engage to prevent movement of each strip 62 along its length. The ends of the strips 62 and of the intermediate seal members 56 may be connected by a tongue and groove (Fig. 8, not shown). A circular end face sealing strip 66 is also provided, radially inward of strips 62, to act as an oil seal. To provide effective end sealing with the apex sealing strips 52, they should be made of material whose coefficient of thermal expansion is between 0.4 and 0.7 for a water-cooled engine, or 0.65-0.8 for an air-cooled engine, times as great as that of the material of which the casing is made. The end wall sealing strips may be omitted from one side of the rotor. The axial width of the rotor (shown in Fig. 5) varies with the distance from its axis, to allow for thermal expansion.
