摘要 <PICT:0909147/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0909147/IV(a)/2> Short length artificial filaments are produced by melt spinning a synthetic organic thermoplastic material such as a polyaminocaproic acid from a spinning head 3 (Fig. 1) into a quenching bath of water 5 in the form of a bundle of filaments 4 which are drawn over deflecting members 7 and 8 to a filament cutting device 10. The deflecting member 7 consists of a tube 11 (Fig. 2) closed at both ends and having a longitudinal slit-like opening 12 provided at each end with a projecting pin 13. Opposite the opening 12 the tube 11 communicates with a cold water supply line 14 provided with a control valve 15. The thickness and the number of filaments 4 on the one hand and the distance between the pins 13 on the other are so related that the filaments contact one another as they are drawn over the slot 12 of the deflecting member 7. By adjusting by means of the valve 15 the force with which cold water is discharged from the slot 12 against the filaments 4 the latter can be caused to adhere to each other slightly. Short ength filaments thus produced have a very uniform size and shape, rendering them suitable for the melt spinning of continuous filaments and for injection moulding.
