Halogen-containing polymers, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, and copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride are stabilized by mixing them with a composition comprising a basic acting substance and an arylurea containing at least one phenyl group substituted by at least one non-hydrocarbon substituent. Specified arylureas are ethoxyphenylurea, N,N1-di-(p-ethoxyphenyl) urea, 4-acetophenylurea, 2 - chlorophenylurea, 4 - carbethoxyphenylurea, 2,4-dinitrophenylurea, 4-diethylaminophenylurea, N-methyl-N-p-methylaminophenylurea, mixtures of ortho- and para-methoxyphenylureas and ortho- and para-ethoxyphenyl ureas. The basic substances may be carbonates, bicarbonates and hydroxides of the alkali or alkaline earth metals, e.g. sodium or magnesium, magnesium oxide, basic phosphates, alkali salts of weak organic acids, and organic amines. The polymers may contain a plasticizer, e.g. dioctyl phthalate, and the stabilizing compounds may be added, as such, in solution or suspension during the preparation or processing of the polymer, or to the finished polymer.
