Normally liquid polymers or copolymers, particularly dimers, of olefins having four carbon atoms are obtained in the presence of a lamellar complex of an alkali metal and carbon, preferably graphite. The olefin is preferably isobutene which may be dimerised alone or with ethylene. Specified complexes are KC8, KC16, KC24, KC36, KC48, KC60, and NaC64. Free alkali metal and/or carbon may be present. Suitable conditions are -10 to 400 DEG C. and 50-4,000 p.s.i.g. The catalyst may be used as a fixed or fluidised bed or as a slurry and a hydrocarbon solvent may be used.
