A copolymer of vinylidene cyanide with vinyl acetate and optionally itaconic acid anhydride, vinyl sulphonic or phosphonic acids is prepared using, e.g. azo-isobutyric acid dinitrile as catalyst and then formed into filamentary materials. The copolymer may have an alternating structure.
