Gate insert of injection mold, comprising: base member defining nozzle interface for receiving nozzle of melt distribution system, and defining gate configured to fluidly link melt channel of nozzle with molding cavity; thermal regulator includes direct energy conversion device for heating and cooling; regulator controls temperature of gate; controller configured to control regulator by varying polarity and magnitude of applied current to regulator, controller connected to temperature sensor arranged in base member, temperature sensor monitors temperature of gate, controller operable for generating first control signal to drive regulator for controlling regulator to heat gate, controller for generating second control signal for controlling regulator to cool gate, temperature sensor configured to: (i) generate feedback signal to controller, feedback signal representative of the temperature of gate, (ii) transmit feedback signal to controller; controller generates first and second control signals responsive to feedback signal, temperature of gate is actively controlled.
