A composite vaccine for the immunization of dogs or foxes against distemper and Hepatitis contagiosa canis (H.C.C.) is prepared by mixing (a) an aqueous suspension of H.C.C. virus which has been extracted from the liver and/or splean of dogs or from tissue cultures and which has been inactivated with formaldehyde, the excess of formaldehyde being chemically bound by adding a quantity of an acid salt of sulphurous acid amounting to 150 DEG to 200% of the stoichiometric quantity with (b) a suspension of an apathogenic distemper virus obtained by cultivating a pathogenic distemper virus in at least 50 successive passages in a tissue culture of organs from animals susceptible to distemper and collecting the thus obtained nutrient fluid containing the modified virus, and then lyophilizing the mixture. The vaccine may be admixed with an injectable carrier, e.g. isotonic sodium chloride. It may comprise equal proportions of (a) 25% tissue culture of the apathogenic distemper virus, 15% aqueous glucose and 60% beef nutrient broth, and by 90% extract of inactivated H.C.C. and 10% of 2% aluminium hydroxide solution. Specifications 904,301 and 931,137 are referred to.
|
