A machine tool, such as for boring or milling, comprises a spindle head 34 slidable on a gear case 32, a tool spindle 40 slidable in the same direction and a mechanical drive for effecting the feed of the head and the spindle. A column 10 carries a hand, or power-driven slide 16, which may have an inclined surface, Fig. 4, and a horizontal slide 24 carrying the vertical gear-box slide 32. The head 34 carries a spindle 38 having tool-clamping means 44. The spindle 40 is moved axially, by a screw 90, within a sleeve 46, rotatable in a bush 48 by a gear 50 meshing with a gear 56 which rotates the other spindle. The gear 56 is rotated by gears 60, 62, in the gear-box 32. A gear 68 rotates a nut 76 which can be connected by a clutch 100 to rotate with a screw 78. The screws 90, 78 are connected by chain gearing 84 to rotate together. The spindle head can be locked by clamps 116. With the clutch engaged as shown, the spindle 40 is advanced. For forward feed of the head, the clutch 100 is moved by a lever 102 to engage a fixed clutch plate 104. Rotation of the screws 78, 90 is thereby prevented and rotation of the nut 76 feeds the head. A wheel 114 connected by bevel gearing to the nut 76 is used for manual adjustment. |
