A heat exchanger comprises pairs of platetype fin members 20 extending between an inlet header 18 and an outlet header 22, and at least one serpentine heat exchanger tube 14 located between a pair of fin members so that the tube is wholly located within the heat exchanger, making the U-bends available as part of the heat transfer surface. As shown, the heat exchanger incorporates a series of heat exchange elements 24 separated by sheets 26. Each element 24 (Fig. 4) comprises two corrugated fin members 20 having recesses 36 (Fig. 5) to accommodate a serpentine tube 14 in the space between the two portions 46 and 48 (Fig. 6) of a parting sheet 28, and the sides of the element are sealed by channels 30 and bars 31. Each fin member 20 is formed in three sections 32, 34, 37 (Fig. 2), one to accommodate the straight portions and two to accommodate the U bends and end portions of the tube 14. The tubes 14 extend between an inlet header 12 and an outlet header 16. All parts of the heat exchanger are joined together by brazing or welding. In a modified construction (Figs. 8-10, not shown), a serpentine tube is located between each pair of adjacent fin members, adjacent serpentine tubes being staggered so as to offset the recesses formed on the opposite sides of a fin member.
