PURPOSE: A data backup control device in an optical disk drive archive system and a method thereof are provided to measure and manage recording quality information per according to an optical disk, thereby selectively performing a data backup operation at a proper timing. CONSTITUTION: An optical disk cartridge(300) stores optical disk management information. The optical disk management information comprises measured recording quality information. A controller(41) controls an operation of an optical disk drive by referring to the optical disk management information if a set monitoring timing is reached. The controller measures recording quality information of the optical disk. The controller backs up data of the optical disk according to a changed amount between the measured recording quality information and recording quality information stored in the optical disk management information.
