PHARMACEUTICAL COMPOSITION FOR PREVENTING AND TREATING ATHEROSCLEROSIS CONTAINING APAMIN

PURPOSE: A pharmaceutical composition containing apamin and a food composition containing the same are provided to reduce TNF-alpha and IL-1beta expression levels and to increase a HDL cholesterol level. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating arteriosclerosis contains apamin as an active ingredient. The apamin is isolated from bee venom and reduces TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, VCAM-1, and ICAM-1 expression level. The pharmaceutical composition additionally contains a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or excipient. The pharmaceutical composition is manufactured in the form of a tablet, capsule, powder, granule, liquid, or pill. The daily dose for oral administration of the composition is 0.001-100 mg/kg (body weight). The excipient includes lubricant, wetting agent, sweetener, flavoring agent, emulsifier, suspension, and preserving agent. A food composition contains apamin as an active ingredient.
