The method involves varying resistant torque of an electric machine for braking a heat engine based on speed of the engine, where the electric machine opposes torque resistant to the engine and another torque resistant to the engine less than the former torque during engine speed decreasing phases. The resistant torque of the machine is varied when the engine has speed less than 200 revolutions per minute. The engine speed is determined by speed of the electric machine. The thermal engine is stopped with pistons in equilibrium position during one of the phases. An independent claim is also included for a vehicle comprising an engine and an electric machine.
