Dyeing keratin fibers, comprises: (a) application to the keratin fibers of (i) at least one hydroxybenzaldehyde derivative (I) or its organic or mineral acid or base salts, or solvates such as hydrates, (ii) at least one chemical oxidizing agent, and (iii) at least one alkalinizing agent; and (b) heat treatment of the keratin fibers at a temperature above 30[deg] C, where the total concentration of (I) is greater than 1% relative to the total weight of ingredients (i)-(iii), or of the total weight of the composition(s) used in the process. Dyeing keratin fibers, comprises: (a) application to the keratin fibers of (i) at least one hydroxybenzaldehyde derivative of formula (I) or its organic or mineral acid or base salts, or solvates such as hydrates, (ii) at least one chemical oxidizing agent, and (iii) at least one alkalinizing agent; and (b) heat treatment of the keratin fibers at a temperature above 30[deg] C, where the total concentration of (I) is greater than 1% relative to the total weight of ingredients (i)-(iii), or of the total weight of the composition(s) used in the process. Either R1-R5 : H or halo, OH, 1-5C alkyl (optionally substituted), 1-5C alkoxy, -C(O)-OH or -C(O)-O ->M +>, -O-C(O)-NR1aR1b (preferably -O-C(O)-NH 2), -C(O)-NR6R7, -NR6-C(O)-R7 (preferably -C(O)-NH 2), -C(O)-O-R8, -O-C(O)-R8, 1-5C alkylcarbonyl, -C(O)H or NR1aR1b; or CR1R2, CR2R3, CR3R4 : 6-membered (hetero)aryl, preferably phenyl; M +> : cationic counterion such as an alkali metal or alkaline-earth metal, or ammonium; R1a, R1b, R6, R7 : H or 1-5C alkyl; and R8 : 1-5C alkyl. Provided that: at least one of the two radicals R1 or R3 is hydroxyl group; when R1 is a hydroxyl group, then R2-R5 is H atom; and when R3 is a hydroxyl group then R1, R2, R4 or R5 is H atom. Independent claims are included for: (1) a cosmetic composition comprising (i) at least one derivative (I), (ii) at least one chemical oxidizing agent and (iii) at least one alkalinizing agent, where the pH of the composition is above 7, the total concentration of (I) is greater than 1% relative to the total weight of the ingredients (ii) and (iii), when (I) is 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, 4-hydroxy-2-methoxybenzaldehyde, 3,5-dimethoxybenzaldehyde, 4-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde, 3,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, then the alkalinizing agent is other than monoethanolamine, and when (I) is 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde or 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde, which is in the presence of 2-aminophenol or 2,5-diaminotoluene sulfate, then the alkalinizing agent (iii) is other than ammonium hydroxide; and (2) a multicompartment device comprising from 2-4 compartments containing 2-4 compositions in which the ingredients (i)-(iii) are distributed, where the compositions are aqueous or pulverulent, with at least one of the compositions being aqueous. at least one of R1 or R3 : hydroxyl group, when R1 is hydroxyl group, then R2-R5 is H and when R3 is hydroxyl then R1, R2, R4 or R5 is H.
