<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a member in which a carbonized product of wood cells are exposed uniformly in at least one surface, and a member obtained by the manufacturing method. <P>SOLUTION: A member is produced by a method (1) of cutting lumber by irradiating the lumber, in a scanning way, with a laser beam focused in a cone form; a method (2) of cutting lumber by irradiating the lumber, in a scanning way, with a laser beam focused in a semi-cone form; a method (3) of exposing end parts of the cells by cutting lumber with a sharp blade or a laser mean and bringing a high-temperature body into contact with the exposed parts; a method (4) of cutting lumber with the blade of a member having sharply edged end heated to high temperatures; and/or a method (5) of pressing the edge of a rectangular body having a straight edge heated to high temperatures toward lumber and sweeping.
