A lancet housing assembly (30; 400; 430; 452; 00; 600) includes a housing structure comprising multiple lancet compartments (40; 405; 444; 458; 505; 605). At least one of the lancet compartments includes an outer facing side (64) and an inner facing side. (66) An opening (68) is located at the outer facing side (64) that is arranged and configured to align with a lancet port (20) of a medical diagnostic device (10). A lancet structure (24; 406; 432; 450; 506; 606) is located in the at least one lancet compartment and comprises a skin penetrating end (90; 408; 434; 462; 508; 608) and a blood transport portion (92; 410; 464; 510; 610). The lancet structure has (i) an initial configuration where the lancet structure is supported to align the skin penetrating end with the opening to allow the skin penetrating end to extend through the opening and (ii) a retracted configuration where the skin penetrating end moves to a position within the lancet compartment offset from the opening to prevent the lancet structure from extending through the opening.
