The device has a comminution device (4) arranged at a transport path and provided for exerting force on empty goods (12) supplied to the transport path. A shielding element (5) i.e. cover, is arranged in a housing (7) in a movable manner. An opening of the housing is closed by the shield element in a closing position of the shield element such that a surrounding area of the device is shielded against particles and/or fragments produced during comminution of the empty goods. The opening of the housing is opened for retaining the empty goods in an opened position of the shield element.
