[Also in Group XVII] A closure of paper, paper coated with metal foil or plain metal foil is formed by winding the material 1 round a mandrel 2 and indenting an overhanging portion by means of pins 6, 7 so that the end of the material is of star shape (Fig. 4), the end is subsequently pressed down on to the end 3 of the mandrel and may be heat sealed. Apparatus for forming the end of the closure comprises a rod 9 having a head 8 carrying pins 7 and a sleeve 10 carrying pins 6 urged by a spring 12 against the head 8. The rod is advanced to the position shown in Fig. 6 where the sleeve 10 is arrested by a stop and the rod 9 and pins 7 continue to advance and indent the end of the closure. In a simpler embodiment, both the pins 6 and the pins 7 are mounted on the head 8 and move together, the sleeve 10 being dispensed with. A final folding device (Fig. 9) is brought into alignment with the mandrel and comprises a tubular body 16 sliding on a longitudinally reciprocable rod 14 and an outer sleeve 17 that grips the end of the closure against the end of the mandrel. The body 16 advances to the position shown and folds down the indented overhanging end of the closure and then the rod 14 continues to advance and its end 15 compresses the end of the closure against the mandrel end. The material may be coated with a thermoplastic lacquer which is activated by a heated pressure stamp ; the stamp may be covered with a glass fabric to prevent it sticking. The stamp or the end of the rod 15 can have letters therein to form embossing on the end of the closure. Specification 925,055 is referred to. |
